Assignment 9B: Symmetry Theory in Poster Design

Overview

Assignment 9B focused on applying the principles of symmetry theory to recreating a movie poster design. The primary objective was to explore how symmetry influences visual balance, harmony, and viewer perception in graphic design. We were instructed to recreate posters provided in the Adobe Illustrator template file while incorporating our own stylistic choices and branding. This assignment aimed to challenge our technical skills, design consistency, and ability to understand and apply theoretical concepts practically.

Process

Initially, I misunderstood the assignment’s requirements. I believed we were meant to design an original symmetrical movie poster from scratch. Based on that, I developed a concept that focused more on original composition and personal creativity rather than the intended exercise of recreation with originality.

Once I viewed my classmates’ submissions and watched the lecture video, I realized the true purpose was to recreate the Adobe Illustrator posters provided in the template. This exercise was intended to help us understand symmetry by reverse-engineering symmetrical elements and layouts—effectively a technical and observational learning task, not just a creative one.

Critique

Strengths:

  • Brand Integration: My subtle brand integration gave the design a unique signature without overpowering the purpose of replication.
  • Attention to Detail: I paid close attention to spacing, font size, and alignment, ensuring the visual weight was evenly distributed.

Weaknesses:

  • Initial Misunderstanding: The main drawback was my initial misunderstanding of the task, which caused lost time and required me to restart.
  • Over-Customization Risk: In trying to “make it my own,” I may have initially deviated too much from the original structure, which could dilute the intended learning outcome.
